Psychiatry & Medication Management

Psychiatric care at North Star Health begins with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation that typically extends well beyond a standard initial appointment. Prescribing decisions are made within an ongoing clinical relationship, not handed off between providers at each visit. Our psychiatrists manage a range of presentations including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, OCD, ADHD in adults, and conditions that have not responded cleanly to prior treatment, and they document the reasoning behind each pharmacological choice.

Specialty Care

North Star Health maintains structured clinical programming in several high-need specialty areas where a generalist outpatient model is insufficient. These include a focused perinatal mental health pathway for women navigating pregnancy and the postpartum period, an OCD and anxiety intensive track that applies evidence-based exposure and response prevention protocols, and a program for adults whose mental health presentations are complicated by co-occurring chronic medical conditions. Each specialty track involves coordinated care planning across the relevant disciplines within the practice.

Couples & Family Care

Relational and family therapy at this practice addresses the ways that mood, anxiety, and behavioral patterns inside individuals create dynamics that are difficult to resolve without bringing the relationship system into the room. Our clinicians who work with couples and families are trained in structured relational modalities and approach conflict, communication breakdown, and life-transition stress from a clinical rather than purely supportive orientation.

Psychotherapy

Individual therapy at North Star Health is delivered by licensed clinicians who work within structured, evidence-based modalities including cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and exposure-based approaches, selected based on diagnosis and patient presentation rather than clinician preference alone. Sessions are not open-ended check-ins; they are goal-directed, periodically reviewed for progress, and adjusted when outcomes plateau. Patients in concurrent psychiatric care benefit from the direct communication channel between their therapist and prescriber.

Telehealth

Secure video appointments are available for established and new patients in Minnesota who prefer not to travel to a clinic or whose schedules require greater flexibility. Telehealth at North Star Health uses a HIPAA-compliant platform integrated with our clinical records system, ensuring that the documentation and coordination standards that apply to in-person visits apply equally to remote ones. Not all services are appropriate for telehealth delivery, and our intake team will advise honestly when an in-person evaluation is clinically preferable.

About the practice

North Star Health

Effective psychiatric care is not a transaction. It requires time, precision, and a clinical framework that holds across appointments. At North Star Health, that framework is built into how we staff, how we schedule, and how we think about the work.

Our clinical team is composed of board-certified psychiatrists and independently licensed therapists (psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors). We deliver care both in person and through secure telehealth, and we work with most major commercial insurance plans.

Common questions

Frequently asked

How long does it typically take to get an initial appointment at North Star Health?
Availability varies by service type and clinician. Psychiatric evaluations, which require a longer initial block, may have a longer lead time than psychotherapy intakes. We recommend contacting our scheduling team directly for a current estimate, as waitlist conditions change. If your need is urgent, please indicate that at the time of inquiry and we will triage accordingly.
Is telehealth available for all services, including psychiatric medication management?
Telehealth via secure video is available for many of our services, including medication management visits for established patients and individual psychotherapy. Some initial psychiatric evaluations are conducted in person by clinician preference, as a structured in-person intake supports more thorough assessment. Your care coordinator will clarify what applies to your specific service at the time of scheduling.
What credentials do the clinicians at North Star Health hold?
Prescribing clinicians are board-certified or board-eligible psychiatrists or psychiatric nurse practitioners licensed in Minnesota. Psychotherapists hold independent licensure at the level of licensed psychologist, licensed clinical social worker, or licensed professional clinical counselor, each of which requires supervised post-graduate hours and a qualifying examination. Credentials are verified at hire and maintained through ongoing continuing education requirements as a condition of practice membership.
